General Manager’s Comments for March 2015
Congratulations to the Division 4, Orange Team for winning the Grand Final of the Pennant Season. A
great team effort by all involved. Thanks to Ross and Kerrie for arranging the photos in the members
lounge. Commiserations to the Blue Team, however what a great effort, leaving us all on the edge of our
seat until the very end of the game.
Memberships for the 2015/16 season are now due, renewals will be handed out this week, all others will be posted out on Monday. Payment of memberships can be made at the Front Reception, from April 1 we can accept payments for your memberships at the bar tills.
Special Meeting held – Wednesday the 25th of March 2015. This meeting was held to approve the amended CMBC Warrnambool Inc., Constitution. The motion was moved by Ron Horne, seconded by Erle Dakin. CARRIED. Therefore the Constitution will now be forwarded to the Department of Justice for approval.
End of Financial Year – the Auditors have already begun their auditing of our financial records, they were in attendance for two days in March. They will be back again early May to finalise their work. This will enable us to work on the Annual Report for distribution to members at the Annual General Meeting.
Café/Bar renovations are due to being in the next couple of weeks.
Tender Specifications have gone out to 5 businesses for the painting of the external façade. Tenders close on Friday the 27th of March. These works will give the exterior of our Club a fresh new look. We hope that these works will commence in the next month, before the cold wet weather sets in (if it hasn’t already!!!).
Footy season is nearly here. Tipping begins very shortly, names need to be on the noticeboard by the 1 st of April. Cost is $20.00 to enter.
Easter Giveaway – Spend $20.00 in the venue – make sure you receive an entry into the Easter hampers.
Thanks to Kerrie, they look awesome.
I’d like to wish everyone a very happy Easter. If you are going away, drive safely and enjoy the break.
Julie Dosser General Manager From the Boardroom The Board have completed the first draft of the budget for the Club’s 2015/16 financial year. The new manager’s role in putting these figures to the Board required to keep in mind the strategic plan (which will be reviewed this year). The key to these objectives and strategies for our organisation, and the vision needed to achieve these outcomes.
The capital works budget has been closely looked at and the budget includes the following and in the order in which we believe that they need to be completed during the coming year.
We have received the quotes for this work and the builder has been selected. We are waiting for him to give us a starting date. We believe it may be before Easter. There will be some inconvenience for a short time but we are sure that the members and our customers will be understanding.
A small alteration to one bank of gaming machines and another small bank for gaming machines will be created. We are waiting for the approval from the VCGLR for this work to commence. New carpet and tiles will then be laid in the gaming room and lounge to complete the work in this area.
Roof Capping/External Painting:
Quotes are being sourced at the moment and these will close on Friday March 27th. All of the capping on the roof is to be replaced first and then the external of the building is to be painted. Six firms are supplying quotes for this work. It may be able to be achieved prior to winter.
The Club has some 550 downlights throughout the building. All of these are going to be replaced. This will allow a considerable saving on our power bill. A sizeable rebate to the club for putting this new lighting into the building.
The carpet in the passage between The Carmichael Room and the entrance will be replaced.
Many members head north for the winter and we are sure there will be much interest when they return to the Club.
Daryl Andrew Board Chairman The All-New Mazda3 is available now at Warrnambool Mazda!
The Pennant season is over and City has won a Pennant Flag through the supreme effort of the division four Orange Team. One could reminisce on the fortunes or the misfortunes of the Blue team having fought valiantly to win only to be defeated by one shot overall, this was a wonderful effort but did not quite reap the benefits deserved. To all those players who gave of their time to represent the club during the season, please accept my heartfelt thanks for your effort in flying the City Memorial Bowls Club flag at all times, for it has not gone unnoticed.
Maybe with the installation of the new carpet green our fortunes will change in the coming years ahead.
The innovation is a great asset to the club and gives us the use of four greens should they be needed into the future which should encourage competitors from all points of the Western District.
At our last men’s meeting the suggestion was made that maybe the club should now have a Bowls Coordinator. This is a position which a number of other clubs in Victoria have implemented but it is also noticeable that these clubs have embraced Unification. The suggestion was passed on to the Executive meeting and was rejected initially and understandably so. For such an innovation there needs to be a clear definition of the role and the impact it would have upon the existing structure within the bowls section. What are the requirements of such a position? Would the position require support? Would this person report to the Board? What structural changes would be required for it would not need to add another level of control within the club and would need the general acceptance of such a proposal by all of our members. However, all of this is good food for thought as the success of this club enjoys is built by the diligent work of the sub-committees and volunteer groups who provide the marvellous outcomes for the Bowls fraternity.
The date has been chosen for the Men’s Section Annual Meeting that being Wednesday 29 th April in The Carmichael Room at 4.30pm similar to last year. A time which those who attended seemed to approve of last year. I have decided not to seek another term as Men’s President so this will now provide an opportunity for a new President as well as a Vice President as Les Hawkins indicated at his election last year he would only be available for the one year for which I thank him for his support. It should also be noted that it appears that it is the responsibility of City Memorial Bowls Club to provide a President for the Western District Bowls Division (WDBD) for the coming year as well. This is a challenging position but one that has to be filled for the benefit of all of the clubs within the division.
The successful achievements of some of the individual members of our club has been great with David Wells successful in men’s singles, Kevin O’Keeffe and Pauline Burleigh with the mixed pairs and Dorothy Gleeson in the ladies’ fours. All of these people will represent the club at Bendigo in Bowls Victoria State Championships as they strive to become Victorian Champions in their particular fields having been successful at the Regional finals. We wish them every success in their individual events to be staged Thursday 23rd and 24th April 2015 at the Bendigo East Bowls Club, 33 Lansell Street, Bendigo. Hopefully their success will stand alongside Brian Scott who won the Over 60’s Championship earlier this season.
A big thank you to all who made our Charity Day a great success. A cheque for $462 has been sent to Foodshare, this was money raised from the raffle and entry fees. A good result all round, thanks to all who supported the day and provided afternoon tea. A very worthy cause.
Thanks must also go to all those who came along and made President’s Day such a great success and lots of fun. A great day to finish off the season. Thanks to the match committee for making it a “different” event. Thanks also to Karina and helpers for setting up afternoon tea which was excellent as usual. We sure do it well for these events, thanks to all those who supplied food for all our special events.
We wish Pauline Burleigh, Kevin O’Keeffe, (Mixed Pairs) David Wells (Men’s Singles) and Dorothy Gleeson (Ladies’ Fours) good luck in Bendigo for the State Championship events from Sunday 19 th April
SOCIAL BOWLSWe are trialing social bowls on Wednesdays at 1pm, just turn up and have a great game and chat and cuppa afterwards. It is expected it will not be very late finishing depending on how many come along. If successful we hope to continue all the winter. Last week was the first week and all enjoyed the experience.
Social bowls on Saturdays starts again on 18th April – keep a look out for the entry sheet. We will need help over the winter to run these events (winter match) if anyone has some time to spare. Wednesday lunch is on again on the first Wednesday of the month, Craft in the morning for those interested, lunch and then perhaps a few ends of social bowls to work off lunch. Lunch starts 1 st April at 12.30pm.
Our Ladies Annual Meeting is on at 10am on Monday 13th April. Please consider how you can help the club in some way. We need quite a few people to step up, a Vice President (easy job!), Match Committee, Selection, Floral, General Committee, Publicity Officer. Nomination forms are on the board. Let’s not let our club go the same way as some others, without the ladies committees to have their input. We fought hard to keep our ladies section.
The presentation dinner is on 15th April, free for all pennant players. Non players can also come but have to pay. Names on the board please for catering Last Tuesday quite a few members went to water aerobics at Aquazone. Anyone interested can come along at 10am and join in each week. Great exercise and not too strenuous.
For all those traveling away to events and holidays have a safe journey and good luck.

BOWLS DIRECTOR’S REPORTPennant season is completed for 2014/15. Congratulations must go the our Orange team on winning the Grand Final in Division 4. Division 2 Blue had a very exciting finish to their final series having to play an extra end only to be defeated by one shot, well done to everyone who played on grand final day for the CMBC.
The men’s club triples and four have been completed over the last couple of weekends, congratulations to the winners and runners up in both of these club events. There is only the mixed fours to be played this weekend to finish all our club events for this season.
To Pauline Burleigh, Kevin O’Keeffe, David Wells and Dorothy Gleeson who will be travelling to Bendigo shortly to play in the Bowls Victoria State Championships may you all bowl well and enjoy the experience of bowling against top bowlers from other centres around Victoria.
It is time to give a little thought what you may be able to volunteer for in regards to nominating for either President, Secretary, Match, Selection or any other committee positions at the Annual Meetings of both the Ladies (13th April) and the Men’s (29th April). We would not have a bowling club only for all the volunteers who fill the necessary positions – so please do not be afraid to put your hand up to help out and enjoy the experience.
I would like to say thank you to the Match Committee on the running of the Daylight Saving Pairs run over six weeks. It was a successful event with good entries each week – well done guys.
