CONTRA COSTA HILLS CLUB – HIKING SCHEDULE

APRIL 3 – JUNE 30, 2016 Version 10

Selected Guidelines: Leaders: Appoint a rear leader; wait at intersections for all to catch up. Hikers: Let the leader lead. Report to leader if dropping

out before end of hike. Everyone: Bring water & drink it. Bring lunch unless stated otherwise. Sticks & boots advised on hilly trails. Carpooling: When cars are needed, call leader before the hike with offer to drive. Hikers needing rides must also call. Riders are to share expenses with drivers.

Suggested rate is 15-cents per mile plus share of bridge tolls & entrance fees.

SUN., APRIL 3 SAN BRUNO MOUNTAIN, DALY CITY

9:30 Meet at Balboa BART, board #8 MUNI EXPRESS bus, eastbound on south side of Geneva Ave., exit Carter & Geneva Ave. 8 miles on pavement and trails with wildflowers, great views with 1300’ elevation gain. Sticks. Hike ends at Daly City BART. Rain cancels.

FREMONT TO UNION CITY BART

THURS., APRIL 7 Due to the delay of the opening of the Warm Springs Bart Station, the scheduled hike will be from the Fremont Bart to the Union City Bart Station.

10:00 Meet at Fremont Bart and exit west side. Aprox. 4.5 miles, mostly level with gradual elevation change. Hike by the Shinn House, Quarry Lakes and Alameda Creek. Stop for lunch at park. Bathrooms at start, park and Bart Station. Cells day of hike: 510-921-1739 and 510-999-1706.

THURS., APRIL 14 LUNCH AT DVC NORSEMAN AND HIKE

10:15 Board County Connection Bus #10 at Concord BART. 10:43 arrive at DVC and go to The Norseman Restaurant in the Hospitality Services & Food Court Bldg. Menu and Prices will be available in the March Extracurricular. After lunch, we will hike (perhaps waddle) around campus & the canal trail back to the bus. About 2 miles; 300' elev. gain.

Hike one-way downhill back to Rock City going from older to younger geologic rock formations: ~5.6 mi., 2287’ descent. Drivers only caravan back to Summit parking to pick up vehicles. ALL HIKERS MUST CALL By Friday 4/15 to arrange car pools. Restrooms & water available. Good hiking shoes w/traction & sticks strongly advised. $10/$9 (senior) day-use fee/car or annual pass. THURS., APRIL 21 SKYLINE COLLEGE TO SWEENEY RIDGE, SAN MATEO

9:40 Board SamTrans #140-Palmetto bus ($2/$1) (San Bruno BART); 10:05 arrive Skyline College. Climb the ridge where the Spanish first saw S.F.Bay in 1769, see Discovery Site plaque. Sticks recommended for this 6+ mi, 500' elev. gain hike. Great views! Return on bus #140 at 1:25 or 2:47 p.m."

SUN., APRIL 24 CONTRA LOMA REGIONAL PARK, ANTIOCH

9:30 Meet @ Pittsburg/Bay Point BART where cars are needed. 10:00 meet @ parking lot on Frederickson Lane (just outside Contra Loma Park entrance). Hike 7 mi./1000' elev. gain with some steep/rutted trails; Homestead, Lark, Carbondale, Ridge & Stewartville.

Sticks needed. No bathrooms. Rain cancels. Riders & drivers MUST call Diane.

9:30 Meet @ Del Norte BART (Mike) or Pleasant Hill BART (Patricia) where cars are needed @ both sites to drive to Fernandez Ranch in Hercules. 6-mile hike on ranch roads and trails, with about 600 ft elev. gain. 9:30 board N Trolley on Muni platform (Embarcadero BART), exit at Steiner @ Duboce Park and walk to nearby Calif. Pacific Hospital to use restrooms. Walk abt. 4 mi on this strenuous hike w/1000 ft. el. gain. on sidewalks/dirt thru Eureka Valley up/down Kite and Tank hills, Mt. Olympus & Corona Hts. w/many 360 degree views. Steep steps; sticks needed. Return via N trolley & BART.

We will condense cars and proceed to trailhead. Private property hike closed to public, sticks advised, approx. 600 ft. elev., about 4 miles. 9:30 Meet @Orinda BART where cars are needed to drive to Bear Creek Staging Area ($3 fee) at Briones Regional Park. Park in lower-lot on the right. 7-mile hike with about 1000' elev. gain. 9:15 Meet @ Concord BART. Walk from there to Pleasant Hill BART using canal trail. Stop at ARF (Animal Rescue Foundation) for guided tour ($5 suggested donation) & lunch (bring your own.) 6 1/2 level miles. Bus stop and shorter hike available. THURS., MAY 19 CROCKETT HILLS REGIONAL PARK, RODEO

9:15 Meet @ Walnut Creek BART (Fran) or 9:30 @ Del Norte BART (Silvia) where cars are needed @ both sites to drive to trailhead, meet there 10:00. About 4.6 miles on hilly terrain with elevation gain of 754’. Bring sticks. Riders & drivers MUST call.

Drive to Ring Mountain trailhead. Loop hike using several different trails, hiking ~4.5-5.0 mi., ~850' elev. gain. No water on trail; restroom at San Clemente Park only. 9:30 Meet at El Cerrito Del Norte BART, east parking lot. Loop hike about 6 miles via Motorcycle Hill to Arlington Park for lunch and rest room. Optional tour at Mira Vista Golf & Country Club afterwards (RSVP by Tues. May 24, tplee789@gmail.com, would be appreciated). Sticks helpful. About 800' elevation gain. Light rain okay.

9:15 Exit Embarcadero BART and meet @ Ferry Bldg. @ 9:30. Hike ~10 miles along Embarcadero, Fisherman's Wharf, Crissy Field & across G.G. Bridge to Sausalito. Return via ferry to Ferry Bldg. ($5.50 seniors, $11.25 adults, Clipper) or G.G. Transit to downtown S.F.

($2.50 seniors, $5.25 adult, exact change or Clipper). Heavy rain cancels, light rain OK.

10:00 Meet at Walnut Creek BART. We will walk via Iron Horse and CC Canal trails to Heather Farm Park for lunch. The roses will be in bloom. Paved, level, 4 to 6 miles – your choice. Hike ends at Pleasant Hill BART.

9:00 Leave Del Norte BART where cars are needed to drive to trailhead @ Dolliver Park in Larkspur, corner of Magnolia & Madrone.

Wind thru wooded neighborhoods, circle King Mtn. Preserve, descend to creek side lunch, traverse historic RR route & descend steeply on narrow trail to creek where Janis Joplin lived. Two sticks recommended. An easy-escape route is available. 7-mi. & 750' elev. gain.

9:15 Meet @ Orinda BART to start an 8-mile, 1600' gain, moderately strenuous hike over the hills to downtown Berkeley where special treat awaits. STICKS RECOMMENDED for some difficult slopes. No cars needed as hike is between BART stations.

9:10 Meet @ Fruitvale BART to take the No. 39 AC Transit Bus at 9:20 to Sanborn Road. Joaquin Miller Park. (Drivers at Ranger Station by 9:45). Enjoy Palos Colorado, Big Trees and Sequoia Bayview Trails for about 5 miles, with some climbs and single-track trails through the redwoods. Cell: (morning of hike only) 510-229-7342.
